Commentary
And when they sometimes said in their obstinacy: 'Perhaps he is like what was revealed to you with knowledge of what you did not know; it is revealed to you with the ability to do what you could not do; so hasten for us death; then resurrection; so that we may see what you have informed us of regarding the disputes depicted; perhaps we will believe you in what you have brought.' He said - responding to them; limiting the revelation to its limitation of warning; which is conveying what has been revealed to him; not hastening anything of what they were promised -: 'Indeed'; meaning: 'what'; 'is revealed'; meaning: 'at a time among the times'; and he built it for the passive; because that is enough in alerting them to the point of indication that their claim is indeed prophethood; not divinity; 'to me except'; and when the revelation is a saying; Abu Ja'far read with a kasra 'Indeed I am a warner'; meaning: 'I am limited to warning'; not that I will fulfill what Allah has promised them; so 'Indeed' is the object of 'is revealed'; standing in place of the subject in both readings; even if the two directions differ; the estimation according to the reading of the congregation with a fathah: 'except warning'; or: 'except that I am a warner'; and according to the reading with a kasra: 'except this saying; which is that I say to you such and such'; 'clear'; meaning: 'I do not leave any ambiguity in what I convey in any way.'
