And when it had occurred - their habit at the time of fear - was to say: 'Hasten to us this if you are truthful in what you claim'; and it is certain that none can do that except Allah. So they became as if they attributed to him that he claimed divinity. Allah, glorified and exalted is He, said - alerting to that; commanding him to respond -: 'Say'; meaning: to whoever says that to you; 'Indeed, I am only a warner'; meaning: a fearer for whoever disobeys; and I did not claim that I am a god; so that it may be asked of me that; for none can do something like it except Allah. Therefore, it is a limitation of the heart of the one described by the attribute; and he singled out the limitation of the attribute in his saying: 'And there is no'; and he intensified the negation by his saying: 'of a god'; meaning: a deity in truth; due to His encompassing attributes of perfection. And when the context was for monotheism, which is the foundation of the religion; he turned the saying from the manifestation of greatness to something greater than it; and clearer. So he said: 'Except Allah'; and for the encompassing, he expressed with the proper name; which includes all the most beautiful names; and if something shared with Him, it would not be encompassing. And for the uniqueness, he said - proving that -: 'The One'; meaning: in every regard; so it is not possible for Him to have a part; or for Him to have a similar; so that He would be in need of an equal. 'The Subduer'; meaning: the One who subdues others to what He wills; and this is proof that He is the only God; and that their deities are far from deserving divinity; due to their multiplicity; and their equality by similarity; and their need.
