Commentary

And when they were mocking the believers; and ridiculing them; while they were not a place for that; rather their state in seriousness; and their seriousness; is far removed from that; they said - asking: As for the reading of the two sanctuaries; and Ibn 'Amir; and 'Asim; then it is a confirmation; and as for the reading of others, then it is an estimation -: ﴿Did We take them﴾; meaning: We took it upon ourselves; and dealt with it in taking them; ﴿in mockery﴾; meaning: we mock them; and we ridicule them; according to the reading of the kasrah; and we make them subservient; meaning: we use them; according to the reading of the dammah; and they are not worthy of that; rather they were better than us; so they did not enter here due to their wickedness; and it is as if they are more inclined to the permissibility of their being in the fire with them; and their being prevented from seeing them; so they indicated that by feminizing the verb; attributing their concealment from them to a weakness in their sight; despite its strength at that time; so they said: ﴿Has it deviated﴾; meaning: it has leaned, exceeding; ﴿from them﴾.

And when (the Most High) brings back creation on the Day of Resurrection with the utmost precision in their bodies; and their meanings; then their sights will be sharper than they can be; and more penetrating: ﴿Listen to them and see on the Day they come to us﴾ [Maryam: 38] ﴿So your sight today is sharp﴾ [Q: 22] they counted their sights in this world in relation to it as non-existent; therefore they defined their saying: ﴿the sights﴾; meaning: from us; which there are no sights in reality besides it; so we did not see them while they were with us; and with us in the fire; but some of its valleys; and its mountains; and its flames concealed them from us; so 'Am' is equivalent to the entirety of the mockery; and it has been known by this estimation that the meaning of the verse is a true separation; its meaning is: Are they with us or not? So it is from the entanglement: it affirmed the mentioned taking; which necessitates - by the ruling of obstinacy between the two sentences - the non-existence of those who are mocked with them in the fire first; as evidence against its opposite secondly; which is their being with them in it; and it affirmed the deviation of the sights secondly; which necessitates by such that they are with them in the fire; as evidence against its opposite first; which is their not being with them; and the secret of that is that the place for their regret; and their blaming themselves for their error; and what has been mentioned about them is more severe in that.
