And when he mentioned their plunging into the punishment; and their claims that indicated their disgrace; and their regret; and their sorrow; he informed of what indicated the increase of their loss; and their regret; and their humiliation; by their knowledge of the salvation of the believers whom they used to mock; and humiliate; he said: "And they said"; meaning: the two groups; the leaders; and the followers; after they had fulfilled their desires; from what did not benefit them at all from their disputes; "What"; meaning: what thing happened "to us"; preventing that we "do not see"; meaning: in the place to which we were admitted; "men"; meaning the poor believers; "we used to consider them"; meaning: in the abode of this world; "among the wicked"; meaning: the lowly; those in whom there is no good; because they had severed the ties of kinship; and caused division among the tribe; and corrupted relations; and changed the religion; by their continued opposition to people in their words; and actions; despite their state of weakness; and humiliation; and degradation; and bad condition in this world; so its people think that their share of it is diminished; and the abundance of their calamities in it is due to their bad condition with Allah; and they did not realize that He (the Exalted) protects His beloved ones from it; just as a person protects his sick from food and drink; and whoever intends good for him, he gives him of it.
