Commentary
And when the saying of the followers was this, it was understood that they knew that the reason for the misery they reached was the leaders; and this was a cause for the end of their anger towards them. The listener yearned for what would be their matter with them; would they suffice with what they answered them with; or would there be something else from them? So he began his saying - informing that they did not suffice with that; and they knew that they could not take revenge on them: ﴿They said﴾; meaning: the followers; ﴿Our Lord﴾; meaning: O You who are good to us; who prevented us from thanking You; ﴿Who has brought this upon us﴾; meaning: the punishment; by what He has brought upon us of the causes that have led us to it; and they presented that out of concern for it; and they answered the condition with their saying: ﴿So increase for him﴾; meaning: upon the punishment that he has deserved; by what we have deserved; and it is misguidance; ﴿A double punishment﴾; meaning: additional to that; like it once again; by way of misguidance; and they constrained it seeking its greatness; with their saying - expressing with the circumstance; to convey the tightness that preceded the supplication (p-410) that was answered therein; so that it would be another punishment; for it is more eloquent than what is in "Al-A'raf"; because the context here is for the tyrants; and there for the absolute disbelievers -: ﴿In the Fire﴾; meaning: being in it; and this is like the other verse: "Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse"; meaning: like our punishment twice.
