Commentary

And when it was known - according to what has been customary - that they are affected by this saying; a longing arises for what will be of their matter; will they answer them; or will their awe prevent them from what they were in the world? He knows that the causes are cut off there; so there will be no fear from one of them towards another; so he said - resuming -: ﴿They said﴾; meaning: the followers; expressed as a multitude; due to their lowliness; and the hidden aspects of their matter; ﴿Rather, you﴾; meaning: specifically; O leaders; ﴿No welcome﴾; and they clarified by their saying: ﴿With you﴾; meaning: this which you called upon us with; you are more deserving of it than us; then they justified their saying by what made it clear that they shared with them in misguidance; and they added to them by leading them astray; (p-409) so they said: ﴿You﴾; meaning: specifically; ﴿You have brought it forth﴾; meaning: the rushing into punishment; by what you have thrust us into of its causes; and you have presented it in the abode of deception by adorning it; ﴿For us﴾; and when the rushing is; which is the leaping; or entering upon something quickly; as if it is the leaping; it ends with stability; and since the two groups have settled in their seats in the fire; they caused their saying: ﴿So evil is the abode﴾; meaning: your abode.
