Commentary
And when the amazement was such - how about the astonishing?! - it was fitting that it should adhere to its owner so that the observer would increase in amazement; he clarified that they acted contrary to that; confirming what was attributed to them of discord; so he said: ﴿And they set out﴾; and when what they did is not done by a rational person; perhaps the listener might think that the one setting out from them is a worthless person among others; he said: ﴿The elite﴾; meaning: the nobles; and he said: ﴿from them﴾; meaning: not from others; so how about the worthless among them?! And how about others?! Then he affirmed the setting out; embedding in it the saying; because it is one of its necessities; by saying: ﴿Say, 'Walk'﴾; meaning: each of them saying that; commanding himself; and his companion; to be serious in parting immediately; and in words; and if it is paused at 'that'; it should begin with breaking the hamzah; because its origin is: 'Walk'; so the third is broken; just as if it were said to a woman: 'Engage in battle'; it should begin with the dammah; because the origin is: 'Engage in battle'; like 'Go out'; ﴿And be patient with your gods﴾; meaning: adhering to their worship; and not turning to anything else; Al-Qushayri said: And when the disbelievers advised each other to be patient with their gods; the believers are more deserving of being patient in the worship of their deity; and being steadfast in their religion.
And when each of them took what he heard from the Prophet ﷺ to heart; and it captivated his mind; regarding what was indicated by 'the one of remembrance, but'; he is afraid of his companion that he may have turned away from believing in the multiplicity due to what he knows of his own disturbance; they affirmed their saying: ﴿Indeed, this﴾; meaning: the patience in the worship of the deities; ﴿is something desired﴾; meaning: it is worthy of desire; so it is worthy that it should not be separated from him; or that which he calls to is something he desires; and we do not know what it is; based on what we are upon of skill; so it is something that is not known in itself.
