Commentary
And when the longing of the listener intensified for what they deserved by this mention, he said - affirming; indicating his love - glorified and exalted is He - for praising them; and in response to whoever attributes to them; or to any one of them something that is not appropriate; as the Jews denied in what they altered from the Torah regarding Isaac - peace be upon him - in some places; indicating the action with the hamzah; signifying that He drew them from the obstacles to Him; with a single pull; which is in the utmost speed: ﴿Indeed, We have purified them﴾; meaning: for Us is a purity that is fitting for Our greatness which no greatness can compare to; ﴿With a purity﴾; meaning: actions; states; ranks; calamities; and trials; that are free from any mixture; so they became, through patience upon them, in the utmost purity.
And when the reason for the purity was the remembrance of the Day of Judgment; and what will manifest therein of the attributes of majesty; and beauty; and what will be revealed therein of matters whose greatness cannot be described; He clarified it with His saying: ﴿A reminder of the abode﴾; meaning: that pure reminder - a great reminder that does not escape them at all - of the abode that no one else deserves to be called an abode in any way; to the extent that they forgot by remembering this unseen the mention of what they see of the abode of this world; so they do not look at it at all; out of disdain for it; for this constant unseen has made them forget the evident, transient one; contrary to what is upon the common people; and the addition of beneficial and Abu Ja'far; and Hisham; from Ibn 'Amir; with a difference from him; regarding 'purity'; supports what I said that 'reminder'; is a clarification that it is the addition of the attribute to the described; and the meaning is that they do not do anything except that it is (p-398) a means of drawing closer to the Hereafter; so the meaning is that their mention of it is pure from anything else; nothing shares in it; nor is it mixed with any mixture at all.
