Commentary
And when he summarized the punishment that is righteous for the pain of the apparent; and mentioned the one who saves from it; he followed it with a warning about its greatest form; which is the pain of the hidden; rather, the most hidden of the hidden; the attachment to the belief in what the devil whispered to his wife - may Allah be pleased with her -; by which he almost led her astray; so he swore to strike her a hundred times; so that she would not return to anything of that; and lead her away from her position; as he led others astray; so Allah - glorified and exalted is He - guided him to the one who saves from that oath; in the lightest manner; because she was patient and doing good; so Allah thanked her for that; and made this savior after her a lasting Sunnah for His servants; to magnify her reward; and to sweeten her mention; so he said - referring to (p-393)﴿Run﴾ [Sad: 42] -: ﴿And take in your hand﴾; meaning: the one that has become in utmost health; ﴿a handful﴾; meaning: a small bundle of grass; in it are a hundred stalks; like the fronds of the palm tree; Al-Farra said: it is everything you have gathered from something; like the wet bundle; and Al-Samin said: and the root of the material indicates all mixtures; ﴿Then strike with it﴾; meaning: an absolute strike; one strike; ﴿And do not break your oath﴾; in your oath; meaning: do not sin by leaving what you swore to do; so this is a relief for each of them for their patience; and perhaps the expiation was not upon them; and Allah specifically honored us with it; along with His legislation for us; what He made easy for him as an honor for us; and all of this is an indication that Allah (exalted is He) tested him ﷺ in his body; and his child; and his wealth; and nothing remained for him except his wife, so the devil whispered to her; hoping to harm them; as he harmed Adam and Hawwa - peace be upon them -; until he approached her with some of what he intended; and the intended indication is to remind the Prophet ﷺ that if the devil was enabled to whisper to his relatives; and to tempt and mislead; then He has favored him with his wife; the greatest minister of truth; and many of his relatives, uncles; and the sons of uncles; and others; and He preserved for him his body and his wealth; so that his gratitude to Allah (exalted is He) would increase; and in the story is a hint that He is capable of making whoever He wills obey Him; for He is capable of acting in meanings; just as He is capable of acting in entities; and that He - glorified is He - grants this noble Prophet his people, the Arabs; who are now the most severe people (p-394) against him; and others; so all will obey him.
And when patience and pleasing actions are rare among the servants; they are hardly found; so they are hardly believed in; Allah - glorified and exalted is He - explained this honor for him ﷺ and confirmed it; He said - as a means of deriving from what has preceded; in response to those who think that complaining to Him contradicts patience; and indicating that the secret in mentioning Him is to take Him as an example in patience -: ﴿Indeed﴾; meaning: regarding what we have of greatness; ﴿We found Him﴾; meaning: in the realm of witness; according to what we had in the realm of the unseen; so that knowledge of it may be renewed for the people of what we were knowledgeable about; and since the context is for urging absolute patience in His saying (the Most High): ﴿And be patient over what they say﴾ [Al-Muzzammil: 10], He came with the active participle stripped of exaggeration; He said: ﴿Patient﴾; then He began His saying: ﴿Excellent is the servant﴾; then He explained by saying - confirming; so that it is not thought that his affliction is a defect in that -: ﴿Indeed, he is oft-returning﴾; meaning: completely returning to Allah - glorified and exalted is He - contrary to what human nature calls to; Al-Razi said; in Al-Lawami: Ibn Ata said: He stands with us with good manners; the continuity of blessings does not change him; nor does the recurrence of affliction and trials disturb him; Abd Ibn Humayd narrated; in his Musnad; from Abu Sa'id - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: "A man placed his hand on the Prophet ﷺ and said: By Allah, I cannot bear to place my hand on you due to the severity of your fever; the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Indeed, we, the group of prophets, have our afflictions multiplied for us; just as our reward is multiplied; if a prophet is afflicted with lice until he kills it; and if a prophet is afflicted with poverty until he takes the cloak and wraps it around himself; and they would rejoice in affliction just as they rejoice in ease.'"
