Commentary
And when there were two paths for the knowledge that Allah intended to manifest in this existence; a state and a saying; as for the state, it is what the conditions of the existents that He created - glorified and exalted is He - in this universe express, from knowledge that those whom Allah intends can comprehend; and as for the saying, it is this mention which is a translation of all existence; and He - glorified and exalted is He - had preceded the mention; because it is clearer and more evident; and He informed that they turned away from it; and opposed it; and whoever opposes the king deserves destruction; and what they displayed of resistance was a matter that angered the believers; He followed it with what is suitable for frightening the disbelievers; and reassuring the believers; from what the tongue of the state expressed; of the destruction of the warners; and it is the clearest of its indications; and the most evident of His signs; so He said - resuming -: "How many have We destroyed"; and it was as if those calling out with what is mentioned were among some of the destroyed; and they were the closest of the destroyed to them in time; so He included the neighbor for that; and He said - indicating the beginning of the destruction -: "before them"; and He confirmed their multitude by His saying - distinguishing -: "from a generation"; meaning: they were in opposition like their opposition; because they were at the end of hardness; and severity; and strength - as indicated by "generation".
And when their humiliation resulted from being touched by the punishment; He said - gathering; on the meaning of "generation"; because it is more indicative of the greatness of the destruction -: "So they called out"; meaning: with what was said to them: that it is a cause for salvation; from faith; and repentance; and they sought help from one who could save them; or they called out (p-٣٢٦) in fear and astonishment; without intending a caller; so the action would be necessary; and Al-Kalbi said: when they fought and were compelled; they called out: "Flee!"; meaning: you must flee; and they were answered that there is no escape for them.
And when it was established - glorified and exalted is He - in many places that repentance does not benefit except at the time of being able; and choice; not at the time of being overwhelmed; and turmoil; He said (the Exalted) - confirming this meaning in a present sentence; by the addition of the "ta"; which is originally a "ha" in "no"; or in "when"; as they confirmed it by adding it in "perhaps"; and "then"; and the "ha" in "poured"; and the "ta" in "example"; and "now"; so they said: "perhaps"; and "then"; and "poured"; and "example"; and "now" -: "And not"; meaning: and the time is not; "when escape"; meaning: fleeing; by moving forward; and not backward; with a strong movement; nor weak; let alone salvation; Ibn Burjan said: and "naws"; is sometimes expressed for advancement; and sometimes for delay; and it is like the rearing up; and the fleeing of the horse; and "naws of the wild donkey": raising its head; as if it is a wild and rearing creature.
