Commentary
And when the decree was: "So what We have decreed in the past on the Day of Judgment; and We have warned of it; in vain"; He referred to His saying - diverting the speech from the unseen to the manifestation of greatness; indicating that the Great One's greatness does not allow for anything other than the great seriousness -: (p-371) ﴿And We did not create﴾; meaning: according to what We have of greatness; and it may be that the sentence is in the state of being; and when the context is regarding what has occurred from the dispute out of obstinacy; not ignorance; He mentioned from the heavens what cannot be disputed; although the wording is for the genus; thus it includes all; so He said: ﴿the heaven﴾; meaning: the one you see; ﴿and the earth and what is between them﴾; from what you perceive of the winds; and others; creation ﴿in vain﴾; meaning: for no purpose We intended by that; from the reckoning of those in them; just as He reckons the least among you in parts and recompense of those in them with reward for the obedient; and punishment for the disobedient; just as the least of your kings does; for indeed the least of people in intellect does not build a great structure except for a purpose he intends; and that purpose is the separation between people; those whom We have given power and authority in this abode; and We have spread among them the causes that necessitate the spread of purity among them; and the impurities; and We have given them intellects; as a reminder of what is intended; and We have sent among them messengers; and We have sent down to them the books; with the definition of what pleases Us; and what angers Us; so they opposed all of that; so if We had left them without gathering for them; nor fairness among them, this entire creation would have been in vain; there would be no wisdom in it at all; because His creation for harm; or benefit; or not for either of them; and the first is invalid; because it is not befitting for the Most Merciful, the Generous; and the third is invalid because it was in the state of non-existence likewise; so there remained no reason for existence; thus the middle was determined; which is benefit; and it cannot be in this world; because its harm is greater than its benefit; and enduring much harm for little benefit is not befitting for the Wise, the Generous; thus what has occurred is the true promise of benefit in the Hereafter; corresponding to what has been mentioned of the intellect of the wise; and the conduct of the noble.
And when this - which is the opposition to wisdom - was very great; He magnified it by His saying: ﴿That﴾; meaning: the matter far from correctness; ﴿is the assumption of those who disbelieve﴾; meaning: whoever has placed this assumption at some time; has indeed produced disbelief; because he denied the wisdom which is resurrection; to manifest the attributes of perfection; and the recompense with reward and punishment; and whoever denies wisdom has indeed belittled the Creator; thus his acknowledgment that He is the Creator is like "no acknowledgment"; so he was a disbeliever in it; then he caused from this assumption his saying: ﴿So woe﴾; meaning: a great destruction because of this assumption; and he manifested in the place of concealment; generalizing and linking the ruling by description; so he said: ﴿for those who disbelieve﴾; meaning: absolutely; with this assumption; and otherwise; ﴿from﴾; meaning: beginning from ﴿the Fire﴾; meaning: the ruling upon them with it.
