And when he was astonished by them for what had passed; and he invalidated their doubts; and he made them aware that they had exposed themselves to destruction in a near exposure; he followed that with an astonishment greater than the first; so he said: ﴿And they said﴾; meaning: in mockery; not fearing what we warned them with; nor considering the consequence of it: ﴿Our Lord﴾; meaning: O You who has been gracious to us; ﴿ hasten for us﴾; meaning: a favor upon us ﴿our share﴾; meaning: our portion of the punishment which we were promised; and our record in which You wrote that; and You enumerated in it our deeds; and its origin is from 'qatta ash-shay'a'; if he cuts it; and from it 'qatta al-qalam'; and its most common use is in writing.

And when the intended meaning of this was an exaggeration in mockery by requesting punishment at all times; which is between them and the Day of Resurrection; they dropped the preposition; and said: ﴿before the Day of Judgment﴾; so they made all the time between them and it a context for that; and they made its hastening a favor upon them; as a sign of their deep mockery; and he expressed with 'qit' as an increase in alerting to indulging in desires; without any evidence; for its essence is generally revolving around what is disliked; and its derivation is from 'al-qatt'; which is cutting; so 'al-qit': the share; and the receipt; and the record of accountability; because it is a piece of paper; and accountability is a piece of matters; and it cuts in it with what is for him; and the hour; because it is a piece of time; and 'taqtaqat al-rajul'; meaning: he followed his desires; which is a piece of his matter; and 'the horses came in pieces'; meaning: in groups; in separation; and 'al-qatt': the cutting; and 'al-qattat': the short curly-haired; and 'al-taqtaqa': the sound of stones; so it is as if they said: hasten from that which will be cut off by it; there is no doubt in it; and its sound is heard with utmost intensity; so it destroys; and separates between loved ones; and it is written in every receipt; and its news is recited in all ages; for that is that we do not turn away from it for anything at all; so glorified is the Forbearing who honored us; and had mercy on us by the Prophet of Mercy; so He did not hasten for us the punishment; and He turned our hearts to Him; and limited our aspirations - after they had been at the greatest distance - to Him;
