Commentary
And when that necessitated the longing to clarify the past parties; and they were the most insignificant in relation to Him - glorified and exalted is He -; along with their severity in themselves; He clarified that with the letter 'ta' which indicates the second delayed rank; and it is the rank of femininity; from which weakness is necessary; so He said: ﴿They denied﴾; and when their intention was denial; not to the end; they were counted as those who encompassed the time; so the preposition was removed and it was said: ﴿Before them﴾; meaning: like their denial; and when it was for the first of the deniers from the multitude; and strength; and gathering over long times; which was not for those after them; they were more deserving of precedence in this context due to their advancement in time; so He said: ﴿The people of Noah﴾; and they continued in their pride; and their opposition; until they saw the water had taken them; and they did not allow themselves to submit; nor to humble themselves; to Noah - blessings and peace be upon him - to ride with him; or for him to pray for them so they would be saved.
And when the people of Hud - blessings and peace be upon him - had after them a greatness; and honor; that was not for others; along with the strength of bodies; and high aspirations; and the vastness of the kingdom; until they built a garden on earth; He followed them with them; and from their suitability to them that their punishment was by the wind; which is the cause of the clouds; that carry water; so He said: ﴿And 'Aad﴾; naming them with the name that alerts to what they had of power in kingship; and they continued in their opposition until the wind came upon them; and they saw it carrying camels between the sky and the earth; and its beginnings attacked them while they saw Hud - blessings and peace be upon him - and those with him from the believers - may Allah be pleased with them - in safety from it; and the opposition did not allow them to ask him in prayer for them; nor did they submit to what he called them to.
And when they had from strength; and kingship over all the earth; and the construction of Iram with lofty pillars; what would diminish with it the kingship of every king; He followed them with a great kingdom; that overcame others with the might of his sultanate; and the multitude of his supporters; until he claimed divinity in his time; and he became arrogant with the vastness of his kingdom; and the flowing rivers beneath him; along with what he had of the agreement for them that his punishment was by the wind inwardly; even if it was outwardly by water; and that is because when Moses - blessings and peace be upon him - struck the sea, Allah sent the wind which divided it into paths; and dried those paths; and when the Children of Israel were saved; Allah commanded it (the wind) to settle; so the sea closed upon Pharaoh and his people; so He said (exalted is He): ﴿And Pharaoh﴾; mentioning him by name in a text regarding the reality of his matter; and explicitly stating his disbelief; nullifying what the vile ones displayed of their evil; attacking the religion; and creating doubt for the weak Muslims.
And when he specified his disbelief; he described it with what indicates - along with the indication of the participation of 'Aad in the enormity of the matter - the disbelief of his people; he said: ﴿the one of the tent pegs﴾; meaning: the causes that necessitate the stability of the kingdom; and its strengthening; from the elevation of the sultan by the abundance of supporters; and the exclusivity in commands; and the vastness of the mind; and the subtlety of cunning; and the abundance of stratagems; with magic and others; and the quality of management with justice; in what he claims; and the force of oppression; Abu Hayyan said: Its origin is from the house that is supported by its pegs; Al-Afwah Al-Awdi said:
The house is not built except for it has pillars And there is no support if the pegs are not set.
And they continued in honor and discord; and they were struck at times by the flood; and at times by the locusts; and at times by the lice; and another time by the frogs; and by other than that; until they saw the sign of the sea which is the ultimate; and nothing from that turned them away from their discord; until they drowned in their disbelief; at the dawn of their father; as this verse has made clear.
