Commentary
And when this was caused by their desire to insult him, he said: "So they intended by it"; meaning: Ibrahim - blessings and peace be upon him -; because of what they did; "a plot"; meaning: a scheme; to nullify his affair; so that they may elevate their own affair; and their religion is not nullified by what they showed of their inability; "So We made them"; meaning: by Our greatness; because of their actions; "the lowest"; the defeated; by what We nullified of their fire; and We made it coolness and peace upon him; contrary to its usual effect; so Our action was executed; and it was extraordinary; and their action, which was according to custom, was nullified; thus their inability appeared in their actions; just as their inability appeared in their words; by what We manifested of the proof through the tongue of Our friend - blessings and peace be upon him -; and Our power and choice became evident; and I only interpreted the plot as I mentioned because it is deception; and malice; and trickery; and guile; and scheming - whether true or false -; and war; and fear; so all of these meanings - as you see - revolve around planning; and exercising thought and managing opinion.
