Commentary
And when the context made clear the intensity of his enmity, blessings and peace be upon him; and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, had established His custom by making in the stars signs for some of the speculative matters; especially the two seas regarding types of ailments; and the people of that land, who are the Kasdaniyyun, as previously mentioned in 'Al-An'am'; and as Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said; and as indicated by the books of conquests, they were among the most observant of people regarding the stars and reasoning with them about the conditions of this world, in some of what was and some of what will be. And he, blessings and peace be upon him, intended to refrain from going with them to the place where they gather for the festival, to break the idols; and he wanted to conceal the time of breaking from them, so that he could accomplish that. Allah, glorified and exalted is He, said - narrating from him and referring to this as a cause of what has passed -: 'So he looked a look'; meaning: one look; 'at the stars' when they requested from him to go out with them to their festival; so that they would not deny his absence from them, implying to them that he had inferred from that look a hidden illness that would befall him; because they might deny that he was ill if he informed them without looking at the stars; because health was apparent upon him.
