Commentary
Then that became clearer; and illustrated by his saying: ﴿Its fruit﴾; meaning: that which is like the fruit of the palm tree in its growth; then its splitting open to reveal its fruit; ﴿As if they were the heads of devils﴾; in what is a metaphor for those addressed regarding it; and it is the ugliness that has reached its utmost; and this metaphor is found in its most complete instances; whether the devil to them is a name for the serpent; or for something else; because the ugliness of the devils; and what is connected to them; in that they are pure evil; mixed with no good; is established in the souls; and for this reason, everyone who finds the appearance of a person; or their action repulsive; says: 'As if he were a devil'; just as the beauty of the angels has been imprinted in the souls; and their majesty; so they were likened to beautiful forms; and for this reason, the Arabs named the fruit of a tree called 'al-Astanu' by this name; and it is a coarse tree; bitter; foul-smelling; and of an ugly appearance.
