Commentary
And when it was informed that its growth is in the fire; this was a reason for their increased denial; because their lack of faith was a reason for the narrowness of their minds. He said - affirming; in response to those who think that He - glorified and exalted is He - does not test His servants; because He is free from that -: "Indeed, We have made it"; meaning: the tree; "a trial for the wrongdoers"; meaning: those who place things in other than their proper places; like one who is in darkness; as it is a punishment for them in the Hereafter; and a reason for the increase of their misguidance in this world; and if they had placed it in its proper places, they would have known that the One who made fire in the green tree does not burn it; they can extract it whenever they wish; and they burn with it whatever they want of firewood and other things; capable of causing a green tree to grow in the fire that the fire does not burn.
