Commentary

And when he mentioned the evil of what was coming to him, he mentioned the good effect of Allah - glorified and exalted is He - upon him. He said - directing the words to the attribute of benevolence, because it is his station -: "And but for the grace of my Lord"; meaning: the One who is gracious to me, by what He has nurtured me with from keeping me steadfast against following you, and the overlooking of me in associating with you; "I would have been"; a fixed being; "among the brought forth"; meaning: those compelled to attend this dire place in which you are. So, how great is the benevolence of this verse in deterring from companionship with evil companions; for it is of great danger and has a repugnant effect! And indeed, his observation made clear that he did not find a greater pleasure than what he was in; for it is not less than it; for there is nothing more delightful than the sight of the treacherous enemy who has long burned the hearts and disturbed the thoughts, in such denial and great calamities, from the throes of fire.
