Commentary
Then he resumed the narration about his reward for him due to the reprimanding of him; and his rebuke for believing in the Hereafter; by saying: ﴿He said﴾; meaning: to his companion that. And since it does not occur to the mind that he would turn to his saying, this is a type of turning; because it is evidently false; and because this speaker is judged to be among the people of Paradise; he affirmed his words; indicating that his saying had an effect on him many times; by which the devil beautifies it for him; and the souls improve it with desires; and the comfort from the burden of acts of worship; and he presented it in the style of an oath; as a warning of amazement at his safety from it; so he said: ﴿By Allah﴾; and he increased the emphasis after he linked it with the Greatest Name; with the lighter form of the heavier one; so he said: ﴿Indeed, you were about to destroy me﴾; meaning: you nearly caused my destruction; and made me in the worst of places; and in this emphasis is the utmost encouragement for steadfastness for one who is close to instability; and in distancing oneself from bad companions.
