Commentary
And when it was the best of colors; especially among the Arabs; the white mixed with red and a hint of yellow gave it clarity, radiance, and beauty; He said: "Like they are eggs"; meaning: the eggs of ostriches; "protected"; meaning: preserved from any impurity that may affect it; and dust that may cover it; and due to the Arabs' love for this color, they used to say about women: "the white of the veils"; because its color is a pure white with a clear hint of yellow; and indeed, Imru' al-Qais explicitly stated this in his famous Lamiya; he said:
"Like a white that is mixed with yellow, nourished by water that is not diluted."
Meaning: the mixing of white inclined towards redness with yellow; and it is the purest of colors; and the most balanced; it resembles the color of the moonlight.
