Commentary
And when he informed that they were arrogant towards the Oneness of Allah, he followed the news by informing that they spoke about His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, with what He does not approve. He said: "And they say"; meaning: at all times; what they indicated by their words of their great distance from faith; by presenting their saying in an interrogative denial; emphatic; "Are we to abandon our gods?"; meaning: the worship of them. The emphasis on the original words indicates that their denial originates from them; while they know that every knowledgeable person regarding their state sees them as deserving of abandoning what they are upon; due to what he brought, blessings and peace be upon him. Therefore, he informed that what they are upon is obstinacy; by presenting their denial in a manner that is evidently contradictory; by saying: "Of a mad poet"; for madness has no order with it; and poetry requires a sound mind; a proper intention; and a natural disposition in sound meter; or to indicate that the denial of the emphatic is a denial of others by the more so.
