Commentary
And when the intended purpose of their definition is the path to the Fire, first, to increase the regret; he clarified what he understood from the word of purpose regarding the length of imprisonment. He said: ﴿Stop them﴾; meaning: hold them standing; after terrifying them with that guidance which was caused by misguidance. Its result was misery; and their stopping will be at the Bridge. Al-Baghawi transmitted this from the commentators; he said: because the questioning is at the Bridge. Then he justified that by saying: ﴿Indeed, they will be questioned﴾; and he gathered upon them the concerns with this word; so that all their delusions may be removed; and no regret remains except that it is present with them; and no calamity except that it has risen in their hearts and overwhelmed them. For indeed, the one who is accountable is entirely weakness and difficulty; so the position of questioning upon him is the greatest regret.
