Commentary
And he pointed to the low status of their deities; and to the foolishness of their opinions by attributing harm to them; by his saying - diverting the style from the speaker; even if with the appearance of greatness; to one greater than it -: ﴿besides Allah﴾; meaning: the One who is unique in the attributes of greatness; and the qualities of perfection; and the intended ones are those who were pleased with their worship of them; and did not deny that upon them; and he commands them to affirm the Oneness of Allah. (p-209) And when they had followed in this world the path of spiritual misery, they deserved to be bound in the Hereafter to follow its physical path; and for this reason, he caused by the command to gather them his saying - mockingly at them; and to bring them low -: ﴿So guide them﴾; meaning: show them a guidance with which they have no doubt; so that they may know - along with what they are in of being compelled to follow it - their outcome; and this would be greater in their distress; Al-Razi said: The essence of guidance is to precede; and the Arabs call the one who is ahead “the guide”; it is said: “The guides of the horses came forward”; meaning: their necks; and “the guiding stick”: the stick; because it leads its holder forward; and “So-and-so looked at the guidance of his matter”; meaning: its direction.
Then he pointed to the length of their standing; and the badness of their position; by his saying - with the tool of termination -: ﴿to the path of Hell﴾; meaning: the way of the fire that is intensely blazing and clearly evident; which they have no doubt that it will lead them to it; and he specified this name to inform of its intense blaze; and its great raging; and the depth of its pit; and the enormity of its engulfing - by the accumulation of some of it upon others -; and the strength of its burning; and the high status of it; and its fierceness; and the hardness of its turmoil; and its burning; and its encompassing of its inhabitants; and its narrowness; and in it is mockery of them in their being upon other than what they were upon in the world of mutual support; and cooperation.
