22(It will be said to the angels,) “Muster all those who were unjust, and their fellows, and whatever they used to worship

﴿Gather﴾; that is: gather with reluctance; and humiliation; O you who are appointed over the servants from the armies; and He made clear their description which necessitates their destruction; so He said: ﴿Those who wronged﴾; that is: by what they were in the world; by placing things in other than their proper places; from the confusion that only one in the deepest darkness would do; ﴿and their spouses﴾; that is: their followers who have taken them as examples in that type of wrongdoing; and their like among the jinn and others; and whoever aided them even with a part of a word; or was pleased with their actions; so that each group becomes separate; and some of them would rebuke others; and some of them would insult others; ﴿And what they were﴾; that is: by what their corrupt natures called them to; ﴿worshipping﴾; that is: being constant in their worship hoping for its benefit; achieving their loss by relying on something not relied upon; and it encompasses the truly worshipped; or metaphorically by adornment; "And whoever has been promised the best reward"; is an exception by the verse of "the Prophets";
