Commentary
And when it became known from this that there is no good news for them on the day of its arrival; nor any refuge at its descent; he stated that clearly in his saying: 'So when'; meaning: we threatened them; and we denied them because when it 'descends upon their courtyard'; meaning: it overcomes it; for that is the nature of the one who descends upon something without the permission of its owner; and nothing overcomes it except after having overpowered its people; so it settled upon them with a settling that they could not emerge from with it to that courtyard which is the open space free of buildings; as if it is the place of conversation of the people; and the place of their comfort at any time his settling was; whether by night or day; but when their custom was to raid in the morning; he said - by way of example; indicating with the letter 'fa' that it is the cause; and nothing else; 'So evil was the morning of those who were warned'; meaning: those who are deserving of fear; from these; and others; and this threat does not apply except to the day of conquest; and indeed, whoever was not qualified for anything other than warning on that day is in the utmost of evil; and they are the ones whom the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, killed on that day; and among them was one who clung to the curtains of the Kaaba; and that did not benefit him; but they were few; and the remaining ones, if that morning was as evil as its appearance to them, then by Allah, its news pleased them.
