Commentary
Then they specified the resurrection with denial; "Are we indeed to be raised?" They added to it what is obligatory for them due to the intensity of denial; so they said: "And we were"; meaning: a being that is in the utmost state of inability; "dust"; they presented it because it is more indicative of their intent; because it is further from life; "and bones"; as if they made each one - from death and being - to pure dust and pure bones; or a mixture of both of them; a barrier against resurrection; and this is after their acknowledgment that the beginning of their creation was from dust; although this is very apparent; "but minds have been misled by their Creator"; then they repeated the interrogative denial; according to the reading of the one who read it; an increase in denial; so they said: "Are we indeed to be raised?"
