Commentary
And when the previous claim was two matters; one of them is that these warners (p-302) hasten to follow the traces of their forefathers in misguidance; and the second is that most of the earlier ones went astray; and these six stories were presented as a witness to the second; which no nation from its people was guided in its entirety except the people of Yunus - peace be upon him -; this was a reason for the command to establish proof of the misguidance of these; following their forefathers; with a matter that is not clearer in explaining misguidance than this; so he said - mocking them; specifying the matter with him ﷺ as an indication of the greatness of this result; and that no one understands it as it should be understood except him ﷺ: ﴿So ask them﴾; meaning: ask those who turn away from your call to their falsehoods; to respond to you; out of youthfulness from them; and generosity: with what proof; and with what argument they judged by what they say following their forefathers; regarding the angels; who were previously mentioned in "Fatir"; that they are the messengers of Allah; and in "Ya-Sin"; that they are in the utmost severity; so that the punishment of the numerous nations is sufficient in one of them; and so that a single shout from one of them kills all the living; and another shout brings all the dead to life? This is in addition to what this surah has provided them of warning; and reprimanding; and recitation; when it began with swearing by them; because its purpose has a great consideration of their conditions in their purity; and their sanctification; and it necessitates from this inquiry their glorification; and the glorification of the One who created them; and that (p-303) is the purpose of the surah; and the speech was directed from the manifestation of greatness to what is a proof of it; for the messenger indicates the worth of the one who sent him; so he said: ﴿Is it for your Lord﴾; meaning: specifically; and He is the Most High King; who nurtured you; and treated you well with His guidance; and guidance with you; and other matters of yours; until you became the most complete of creation; and the highest of them in every matter through which there is perfection; and closeness to Allah; so He chose you for His message; so in the singularity of the pronoun there is an indication that He does not choose except the most complete, the most noble, the best.
And when the intended purpose was to rebuke them; by their making the inferior for Allah; and that the females are weaker than the males; but femininity can be attributed to something other than animals; and that females in some species - like the jinn - are more noble; he refrained from expressing with females; and expressed with what specifies the intended meaning; so he said: ﴿The daughters﴾; meaning: less than the sons; and they - although they are nurtured and subdued - are extremely disdainful of them; ﴿And for them﴾; meaning: less than him; ﴿The sons﴾; although the Lord; whom they specified with the lesser of the two tribes; sometimes creates the male from dust; and raises him in the best upbringing; and at other times from something else; or brings him forth from the belly of a whale; or from the depths of fire; or other than that; so by what means did they claim for Him a child; and the child can only be through gradual stages of creation; from the drop to what is above it; and no one accepts that except the incapable? So how about claiming the least of the two types of children; glorified is your Lord, the Lord of Might.
