Commentary
﴿And We caused to grow﴾; meaning: by Our greatness; in that place; where there is no necessity for plants at all; let alone that which only grows with a lot of water.
And when his sickness was extreme; reaching a point that is beyond description; He pointed to it with the tool of elevation; and said: ﴿Upon him﴾; meaning: and We raised it at the time of Our causing it to grow above him; to shade him as a house shades a person; and when the gourd is from the stars; and He had greatly honored it - glorified and exalted is He - for his sake; He expressed it with what has a stem; and said: ﴿A tree﴾; and when this expression implies that it has a stem; He specified the breaking of the norm by His saying: ﴿From gourd﴾; meaning: from the trees that are rooted in the earth; and dwell in it; and are suitable for him to seek refuge in and reside by it; until his condition becomes suitable; for indeed He (the Most High) honored it; and brought it out of the habit of its likes; until it became upon him like a trellis; and “gourd” is: everything that extends and spreads over the surface of the earth; and does not remain in winter; and does not stand on a stem; like watermelon; and cucumber; and what is meant by it here - as Ibn Abbas said - may Allah be pleased with them both - is the pumpkin; for the greatness of its leaves; and the coolness of its shade; and the softness of its touch; and that flies do not approach it; Abu Hayyan said: and the water of its leaves, when sprinkled on a place, flies do not approach it at all; and others said: there is a compatibility with the human body; until if a bone were to be taken from his head and a piece of pumpkin skin were placed in its place; flesh would grow upon it and fill its place; and it is from “qatan bil makan”; if he resides in it as a temporary resident; not a permanent one.
