Commentary

And when the decree was: But when he was one who remembered Allah in times of ease; We remembered him in times of hardship; so We saved him from the belly of it; and We brought him out of it safe; and that was a remarkable matter for the intellect; He manifested it in the appearance of greatness; and He said: ﴿So We cast him﴾; meaning: We threw him from the belly of the fish; a throwing that was not for anyone other than him; and that was easy for Us; ﴿in the open﴾; meaning: the desolate place; the vast; free of any cover from vegetation; or otherwise; and that was by the shore of Al-Mawsil; and Abu Hayyan said: He was cast in Nasibin; from the direction of Al-Mawsil; ﴿and he was ill﴾; meaning: very sick from what he experienced in the belly of the fish; to the extent that he was like a newborn child; and at that time he was praiseworthy, not blameworthy; by the blessing of Allah that encompassed him; so he was chosen; and among the righteous.
