Commentary
﴿So he drew lots﴾; meaning that Yunus - blessings and peace be upon him - competed with them. Al-Baghawi said: 'The drawing of lots is casting arrows in the direction of the lottery.' When the outcome of the lottery fell upon him, it meant that he was to be thrown from the ship from a high place to a lower one. He expressed this in a way that indicates slipping, which occurs from a high to a low place. So he said - attributing the cause of the drawing of lots -: ﴿So he was among those who were thrown down﴾; meaning: those who fell into the slip; which is the slipping. Thus, he descended from the place of victory because the lottery fell upon him; they threw him into the sea.
