Commentary

And when He completed - glorified and exalted is He - what He intended of the matters of those who were under His hands, destruction in this world or in the Hereafter, He concluded with one whose people's affairs were directed towards safety, faith, blessings, and goodness. This was to give preference to hope over consolation and comfort. He said - affirming that what comes next regarding the mention of the fleeing one might suggest something about him -: "And indeed, Yunus"; meaning: one of the prophets of the Children of Israel; and he is Yunus ibn Mattah - peace be upon him. Al-Baghawi narrated in the story of Ilyas - peace be upon him - that when Allah (the Exalted) sent him to his tribe from the Children of Israel, who were in the city of Baalbek, they denied him, and their king intended to kill him. So he hid in those mountains, longing for the people. He descended and stayed with a woman from the Children of Israel, who was the mother of Yunus ibn Mattah - peace be upon him -; and Yunus was then an infant. Then he returned to the mountains, and Yunus - peace be upon him - died. His mother came to those mountains and kept circling until she encountered Ilyas - peace be upon him -; she asked him to pray for her son so that Allah would bring him back to life. He said to her: 'I have not been commanded with this; I am merely a commanded servant.' So she was distressed, and her distress and supplication to him increased. He felt compassion for her and had mercy on her, and he went with her. He reached her house after fourteen days from the time of Yunus's death, and he was laid out in a corner of the house. He prayed to Allah, and Allah brought him back to life for her. Then Ilyas - peace be upon him - returned to his mountain. "Certainly, he is among the messengers."
