Commentary
And when this denial was a reason for listening, he repeated it, clarifying its reason. He said: ﴿Do you call upon Baal?﴾; meaning: a god and lord; and it was an idol they had in the city of Baalbek; it was made of gold; its height was twenty cubits; and it had four faces; and the devil would enter its interior and speak with the law of misguidance; and the priests would guard it; they were four hundred; and they would teach it to the people; and it is possible that there was a sign on the mentioned idol; so the second action is intended; and it was omitted to understand the invocation which there is no invocation like it; and it is the invocation of divinity; and whoever reads it unusually as 'Baalā' in the form of 'Hamrā' is an indication of the frequent urging of the king's wife to worship Baal; and the killing of Elias - peace be upon him -; and the obedience of her husband to her in that - as narrated by Al-Baghawi -; thus it deserved the feminine form for that; for it was made feminine due to her frequent association with him; and the gender is the reason for the idol.
And when their calling upon him for worship was clarified by his saying: ﴿And you leave﴾; and the root of 'wadhara' revolves around what is disliked; so the meaning is: and you abandon the abandonment of the neglectful, which is characteristic of him to disdain; and if it were said: 'And you leave' as a play on words, this would not benefit; and the intended meaning would be reversed; and when the caller does not call except by removing harm or providing benefit; it was not permissible for him to call except upon one who is able to eliminate what he wishes and bring forth what he desires; he said - warning them of their error in action and abandonment -: ﴿The best of creators﴾; meaning: He is the one who does not need in creation and elimination to causes; so do not worship Him.
