Commentary
And when it was known for certain that the intended meaning of this matter by the inquiry is merely to rebuke; because it is known for certain that the answer is: they are not stronger in creation than that; thus their resurrection is not impossible; and their overpowering of the Messenger of the One, the All-Prevailing - who has made him prevail over all religion through this revelation - is not permissible at all, neither by transmission nor by reason, in any way; so there is no doubt for them in denying it; nor in their assumption that they will overpower our Messenger; rather they are in a state of great astonishment in denying it; and their assumption that they are victorious in this world; he expressed that by saying - attributing the astonishment to the greatest of existents; or the greatest of created beings; in glorification of Him; meaning that it is a saying that deserves to be said about it: that he does not know what has befallen him; and it was a cause for his committing it; so he said: "Rather, you are astonished"; with the 'taa' being joined; according to the reading of Hamzah and Al-Kisai; directing the saying from the aspect of greatness; to explicitly attribute the astonishment to Him - glorified and exalted is He - indicating that this astonishment has reached a limit that cannot be described; by attributing it to one who is free from it; and by opening it among the others; meaning: from their audacity in their denial of resurrection; especially since the Quran has indicated it in these strange styles; and the marvelous, wondrous aspects; in which there is no doubt for one who has the slightest understanding; and the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - thought - as is appropriate - that no one hears the Quran except that he believes in it; Al-Qushayri said: and the essence of astonishment is the change of the soul by what the cause of it is hidden; from what has not been customary to occur like it; and this is like the narration in the two Sahihs; from Abu Hurairah - may Allah be pleased with him - "that he - blessings and peace be upon him - said to Umm Sulaym and Abu Talhah - may Allah be pleased with them both -: 'Allah laughed - and in another narration: was astonished - at your actions tonight'; and the narration of Al-Bukhari - may Allah have mercy on him - from Abu Hurairah - may Allah be pleased with him - also: 'Our Lord was astonished at a people being led to Paradise in chains'; and there are many similar instances; and the meaning in all of this is to alert to the greatness of the action; and that it is extraordinary; and it may be that the meaning is that they did not deny it; due to the lack of evidence for it; rather there has come from its evidence what is greatly astonishing due to its abundance; and the prolonged patience in its occurrence; "And they mock"; meaning: the astonishment has occurred for you; while they renew mockery whenever you come to them with evidence;
