Commentary

And when the purpose of this greatest book is to clarify the four foundations: Tawhid (Oneness of Allah), Prophethood, the Hereafter, and the affirmation of divine decree and destiny; and He - glorified and exalted is He - indicated through these mentioned matters the existence of Him; the perfection of His knowledge; the completeness of His power over the tremendous actions; and the wondrous wisdom of His; which necessitates the affirmation of His Oneness; detailing some of the generality of ﴾Is not He who created the heavens and the earth?﴿ [Yasin: 81] So what is below it from the actions is more appropriate; this caused - for the affirmation of resurrection; which this Qur'an informed about; which He protected from the deception of the jinn with the adornment of the stars; from which He created the shooting stars - His saying - mocking them -: ﴾So ask them﴿; meaning: ask them to clarify for you what they deny about resurrection; and its origin is from 'al-Futuwah'; which is generosity; ﴾Are they stronger﴿; meaning: more powerful; and more difficult; and harder ﴾in creation﴿; meaning: in terms of the precision of the creation; and its strength; and its greatness; ﴾Or who﴿; and when the intention was to inform that there is nothing among the existents except that it is His creation - glorified is He -; He expressed what indicates that; without mentioning 'us'; so that it may be more general; and He omitted the object because it is understood; and so that it does not become confusing when the pronoun of the questioners is mentioned; (p-200) So He said: ﴾We created﴿; meaning: from these things which we enumerated; from the living; and others from the jinn; to whom we granted the ability to reach the celestial sphere; and others; and He expressed with 'who'; favoring the rational beings among the angels and others; from what is between the heavens and the earth.

And when the answer is certainly that these creatures are stronger in creation than them; and that they are among the weakest of creatures in creation; He said - indicating the intention of mocking them in the question; confirming; pointing to the fact that their denial of resurrection; for their inability to distinguish between soil and soil; necessitates the denial of the beginning of creation in this manner -: ﴾Indeed, We created them﴿; meaning: upon Our greatness; ﴾from clay﴿; meaning: from soft, humble soil; ﴾sticky﴿; meaning: of great mixing of some with others; so it stuck; and shrank; and became tight; and some of it became attached to some; and it decreased; and became dense; and some of its parts entered into some; and it hardened; and became firm; so distinguishing some of it from some became harder than distinguishing some of the scattered soil from some; Ibn al-Jawzi said: Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with them - said: "It is the good, pure, sticky clay."

And they were indeed from clay because their father Adam was made from it; without a father and without a mother. Thus, by this estimation, they became a part of the clay that is part of His creation, which He enumerated before that - glorified and exalted is He. It is known that the state of clay is distant from their state; but they were by His power - glorified is He - that is inherent, which does not prevent any destined matter; nor does it incapacitate any commanded matter. So the beginning of their creation and the creation of what is stronger than them and greater indicates the ability to bring them back certainly; rather, in a more straightforward manner in various ways. And this inquiry beautified all beauty; concluding the speech before it with those who reached the heavens in arrogance and pride; and they intended what they could not attain; in tyranny and pride. And He imposed upon them what would return them defeated, distanced, and cast away; and He excluded from them those who 'snatched' to indicate that it is not impossible what they hoped for from them. This is alongside mentioning their creation from the sticky clay, which is characterized by sinking - due to its heaviness - and descending; just as it is characteristic of those who concluded with them to ascend - due to their lightness - and rising.
