Commentary
And when the glad tidings from Allah do not fail; the decree was: "So a boy was born to him as we said"; ﴿So when he reached﴾; to strive being; ﴿with him﴾; meaning: with his father specifically; and accompanying him; ﴿the striving﴾; which the father is pleased with; and he settles his soul with him regarding the child; and he trusts him; and does not attach himself with a limit; due to the necessity of their both reaching the limit of striving together; and there is no meaning to that in the case of Ibrahim - blessings be upon him -; nor with the striving; because the connection of the source does not precede him; and if it were delayed from him, it would not benefit the specific understanding of his young age; which is beneficial for informing that he would reach in that with him what he would not reach with others; due to the great compassion of the father; and the firm inclination of the son; which necessitates his obedience; and the scholars differed in estimating that by age; some of them said: thirteen years; and some of them: seven years; and for this reason, it was restricted to the father; because others do not show compassion towards the child; so they burden him with what is not within his capacity; and he has not reached the fullness of striving; ﴿He said﴾; meaning: Ibrahim - blessings be upon him -: ﴿O my son﴾; calling him with a tone of affection; and compassion; and endearment; mentioning to him in the present tense the state he saw him in; and portraying it for him; not for the repetition of the vision; for he does not need to repeat; nor to deliberate; for Allah (glorified and exalted is He) showed him the dominion of the heavens and the earth; and confirmed - due to what is in the nature of humans from the implication that it should be said in its reality -; and informing that it is a dream of revelation; not a jumble of dreams; (p-264) ﴿Indeed, I see in the dream﴾; meaning: and you know that the visions of the prophets are revelation; ﴿that I am sacrificing you﴾; meaning: I am dealing with your sacrifice in wakefulness; by a command from Allah (glorified and exalted is He); and for this reason it was as he said; and if he had expressed it in the past tense, it would have proceeded and been completed; and it was only in the dream in this very serious matter; so that the trust of the prophets - blessings be upon them - in what comes to them from Allah in every state is known.
And when the prophets - peace be upon them - were the most compassionate of people and the most sincere to them, he loved to see what was with him. If it was in accordance with what he loved, he would be pleased and would strengthen him. Otherwise, he would strive to make it in accordance with what he loved, so that he would face adversity while it was easier for him, and this would be greater for his reward, for the completeness of his submission. And so that consultation would be a Sunnah, for indeed, "No one regrets who consults." This is indicated by his saying: ﴿So look﴾; with the eye of your insight; ﴿What﴾; meaning: what is it that; ﴿You see﴾; meaning: in this vision. It is a test of his patience, not a conspiracy against him. ﴿He said﴾; affirming Allah's praise of him for his forbearance; ﴿O my father﴾; showing respect towards him, indicating reverence and honor. ﴿Do what you are commanded﴾; meaning: everything that has come to you by command from Allah (the Most High) and a command from Him will renew for you - glorified is He - because I do not suspect you in your compassion and good judgment, nor do I suspect Allah in His decree. The story is evidence of the occurrence of the matter, with the exception of others, and for most of His commands. This has been previously mentioned in "Al-Baqarah" at: "Whether you warn them or do not warn them." And when he knew his obedience, the listener longed for his submission and patience, so he began his saying: ﴿You will find me﴾; meaning: with a definite promise; there is no hesitation in it; truthful, as Allah (the Most High) informed about him; there is no contradiction in it; and he was truthful in his promise.
And when it is from the morals of the complete ones not to cut off in future matters, due to what they know of Allah's (the Most High) ability to nullify resolutions by placing a barrier between a person and his heart, he said: ﴿If Allah wills﴾; meaning: the One who is characterized by encompassing the attributes of perfection; and He confirmed His promise with this matter, which is hardly believed to be like it; by His saying: ﴿Among the patient﴾; meaning: those who are deeply rooted in patience, reaching the utmost limit in it; and this is one of the greatest things intended by His saying: ﴿He was truthful in his promise﴾ [Maryam: 54]
And if the beloved had my hand, I would drink poison; the poison would be sweet from his hand.
And He made this great matter in the dream a sign of the truthfulness of the states of the prophets, in sleep and wakefulness, and the truthfulness of their resolutions, and their submission to all commands in all situations. It has been narrated that the devil whispered to him regarding his sacrifice; he recognized him, so he threw seven pebbles at him, and this became a law in the stones. And one of the most delicate aspects of this is that when they were at the end of detachment from the distractions, their actions were made rituals and laws for the worship of Hajj, whose essence is the detachment for the journey to Allah (the Most High).
