Commentary
﴿So We gave him good tidings of a boy﴾; meaning: a male child of utmost strength; from which arises the vigor. And since this description might imply impulsiveness; he described him with what preserves his clarity; and negates his muddiness; so he said: ﴿Forbearing﴾; meaning: he does not hasten to punishment despite having the ability; because he is of utmost composure; and steadfastness; and this would indicate the occurrence of some trial; by which it becomes clear that he is his father's secret: "Indeed, Ibrahim is forbearing"; and forbearance can only be after knowledge; and the firmness of knowledge is a reason for the existence of forbearance; which is the broadness of the chest for the shortcomings of creation; and the faults of their morals; and this child is Ishmael - peace be upon him -; without a doubt; for several reasons: among them is his description as forbearing; and the description of Isaac - peace be upon him - in the Surah of "Al-Hijr" as knowledgeable; and among them is that this supplication at the time of migration; when he was a young man hoping for a child; is his firstborn who was born to him with this good tidings; and he is the one who was in Mecca, the place of the sacrifice; so his actions in his sacrifice became rites for Hajj; in "Mina"; just as the actions of his mother in the honored Mecca - at the beginning of her affair; when she was on the verge of death from thirst - became rites and landmarks there; and as for Isaac - peace be upon him - the good tidings came to him suddenly; while he did not hope for a child; due to his old age; and the despair of his wife; and for that reason he deliberated on his matter; and it has not been reported that he parted from his mother from the House of Al-Maqdis; and if he were the one to be sacrificed, the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - would have mentioned him by description; when he was asked about the most honorable; and he said: "Yusuf, the Prophet of Allah; son of the Prophet of Allah; son of the Prophet of Allah; son of the Friend of Allah"; and the narration that was mentioned indicating that he is the sacrificed one is weak; rather, our Sheikh Ibn Hajar stated in the verification of the Hadith of Al-Kashaf that there are fabricators in its chain; and because this Surah is a Surah of glorification; the most deserving of mention in it - as has been stated - are the most distinguished people in the antiquity of purity; and he is the most deserving of that; from the time he was a fetus; until the matter of his sacrifice was dealt with; and it was not mentioned explicitly; so if this speech were not intended; it would have been left in this Surah - whose condition is this - someone who is more firmly established in the intended description; and that is outside the path of eloquence; which is the correspondence of the speech to the requirements of the situation; rather, this situation does not necessitate the mention of Isaac - peace be upon him -; because it has not been established that he is the one to be sacrificed; and his mention was only for the clarification of the reward of Ibrahim - peace be upon him - for what his station in kindness necessitated; in the matter of purity and annihilation; and Allah is the Grantor of success.
