Commentary
And when that was the case, the initiative arose to glorify Him (glorified and exalted is He) from that which they struck for Him of examples. Therefore, He said: "So glorified"; meaning: He is free from every blemish of deficiency; a purity that your minds cannot comprehend its essence. He turned away from the pronoun to a description that indicates the utmost greatness; so He said: "The One in whose Hand is"; meaning: by His power; and His specific authority; not by the hand of another. "The dominion of all things"; meaning: His complete ownership; and His dominion; both apparent and hidden. And when the estimation was: "From Him you will begin"; He added to it His saying: "And to Him"; meaning: not to another; from the dust or otherwise. And He directed the saying to address them, belittling them; and showing contempt; so He said: "You will be returned"; meaning: in all your matters; and in a sense; with the resurrection; to judge between you; so that He may admit some to the Fire; and some to Paradise. And the reading of the congregation with the passive construction indicates their utmost insignificance; with the return being by compulsion; and in the easiest matter. And the reading of Ya'qub with the active construction indicates that their submission in returning; is due to the ease of it upon them; as if it arises from their own actions by choice. Thus it is established that He - glorified is He - is capable of all things; and it is established with certainty that He is Wise; and it is established with certainty that there is no deity except Him; and that His words are wise; and it is established with the fullness of His power that He is forbearing; He does not hasten punishment upon anyone; thus it is established that He sent the messengers to give glad tidings of His reward; and to warn of His punishment; thus it is established that He sent this noble Prophet; for what He supported him with of miracles; and made manifest through him of clear proofs. The end of the Surah returns with both the message; and the revival of the dead; to its beginning; and the connection in both matters is that their separation is linked to their connection. And Allah is the Guide to the right path; and to Him is the return and the final destination.
