Commentary
(p-178) And when the decree was: "So he worshipped - although We alone bestowed favors upon him - others; and he argued - with what We created for him of the tongue; and We granted him of eloquence - Our messengers; and all the people of Our affection"; he added to this his saying - condemning their denial of resurrection; a condemnation that is not seen as more astonishing than it; nor more eloquent; nor more indicative of persistence in misguidance; and excess in denial; and ingratitude for favors -: ﴿And he struck﴾; meaning: this human; and the reason for revelation is Ubayy ibn Khalaf al-Jumahi; whom the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, killed at "Uhud"; in a duel; so he is the one intended by this reprimand specifically; and by the first intention; ﴿For us﴾; meaning: based on what he knows of Our greatness; ﴿As a parable﴾; meaning: his deities; which he worshipped; because they cannot do anything; stubbornly denying with his intellect that nothing resembles Us; ﴿And he forgot﴾; meaning: this one who confronted the end of his origin to argue with the Almighty; and displayed his page to debate with Him; and forgetfulness here may mean being oblivious; and it may mean abandonment; ﴿His creation﴾; meaning: Our creation of this adversary; indicating the perfection of Our power; and that his deities, which he associated with Us, cannot do anything; so the situation that united him with the parable diverged in any divergence; and he was told: O one of little understanding! Is he who creates like one who does not create? Will you not remember? Then he began to inform about this parable by informing about its impossibility (p-179) for anyone to be able to revive the dead; just as his deities cannot do that; so he said: ﴿He said﴾; meaning: in the manner of denial; ﴿Who revives﴾ And when the bones are the hardest of things; and farthest from accepting life; especially if they have decayed; and crumbled; he said: ﴿The bones while they are﴾; and when he informed about the feminine with a name for what has decayed from the bones; not a description; he did not affirm the feminine marker; so he said: ﴿Dust﴾; meaning: they have become dust that blows with the winds.
