Commentary
And when He reminded them of His blessings; and warned them of His punishments; He was astonished by their lowly perspective; and the ugliness of their actions; so He said - reproaching; and admonishing; and rebuking; and astonished by the increase of their misguidance; turning away from the manifestation of greatness to something greater than it -: ﴿And they took﴾; meaning: We did that for them; while they burdened themselves with what the original nature does not guide to that they took; or it could be connected to "they were"; from His saying: ﴿Except they were mocking him﴾ [Yasin: 30] so the estimation would be: except they were renewing the mockery; and they took before sending him to them; with what they saw of our power; and the blessings they accepted in it; ﴿Besides Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has all greatness; so everything besides Him; and whatever was besides Him was subdued; and controlled; ﴿Gods﴾; meaning: they have no power; nor any suitability for divinity; and when it was established that they are not suitable for what they were qualified for; the listener became eager to ask about the reason for that; so He said - in answer to him; astonished by their state -: ﴿Perhaps they﴾; meaning: the worshippers; and when their intention was to achieve victory from any supporter; He built for the acted upon His saying: ﴿They will be supported﴾; meaning: that their state, according to their claim, in their gathering upon it; and their coming together with it; is like one who is supported against one who opposes him; and contradicts him; and opposes him.
