Commentary
And when it was as if it was said: Will he judge among them by his knowledge; or will he conduct the matter according to the worldly principle of acting by evidence? He clarified that he is upon what is more evident than the principles of this world. So he said - terrifying for the Day; in the same manner as the previous discourse in the manifestation of greatness; for it is more fitting for the terror -: "Today we seal"; meaning: with what we have of wondrous power; branching from greatness; and he directed the saying towards the silence; signaling the turning away; due to the culmination of anger; so he said: "Upon their mouths"; meaning: for their transgression against the truth in the Hereafter; just as they used to do in this world; and the deceit and falsehood and corruption only occur by the tongue; which expresses the heart; as for the remaining limbs; whatever they may breach the norm by being able to speak; they do not speak except with the truth; that is why he said: "And their hands will speak to us"; meaning: with what they have done; it is a testimony that is the greatest of acknowledgments; "And their feet will testify against them"; meaning: against them; with clear words; it is with the acknowledgment of testimony; "With what they used to do"; meaning: in this world; with their innate dispositions; "They earn"; so the verse is from the intertwining: it established the speech for the hands first; because they were direct; indicating the omission of it from the realm of the feet second; and it established the testimony for the feet second; because they were present; indicating the omission of it from the realm of the hands first; and by the evidence that the saying of the direct one is acknowledgment; and the saying of the present one is testimony; Muslim narrated in his Sahih; from Anas - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: "The servant will say: O Lord; did You not save me from injustice? He will say: Yes; then he will say: I do not allow for myself except a witness from me; he will say: Enough for you today as a witness against you is yourself; and the noble scribes are witnesses; then it will be sealed upon his mouth; and it will be said to his limbs: Speak; so they will speak of his deeds; then he will be left between him and the speech; and he will say: Woe to you; and destruction; for I was striving against you." And it is apparent that the secret in sealing upon his mouth is to prevent him from babbling while testifying against him; so that her words are not heard; as is the habit of the people of obstinacy in disputes.
