And when He commanded them to distinguish, a voluntary legal matter, they distinguished immediately. They concealed their regret and fell into despair. They bit their fingers and ground their teeth. Their eyes were fixed, their faces darkened, their lips shrank, their heads were bowed, their colors turned pale, and they were dragged on their faces. Among the forms of despair and matters of regret are those which minds cannot comprehend. Souls melt at the mention of it, and hearts are torn apart. He - glorified and exalted is He - reproached them in that state with this saying, justifying His judgment upon them by stating that He did not leave them as mere strays. Rather, He endowed them with intellects and established for them sufficient evidence of His perfection for their salvation. Then He did not leave them to that; rather, He sent to them messengers and revealed to them books: "Did I not enjoin you?" That is, I enjoin you with a great injunction regarding the evidence I have established and the intellects I have granted and the messengers I have sent and the books I have revealed, clarifying the path that leads to salvation. He shifted the saying from the manifestation of goodness to what is more deserving of it than the manifestation of speaking of unity, to dispel any confusion. Then He pointed to His exaltedness, majesty, greatness, and the sublimity of His perfection, saying: "To you."
And when the purpose of this address was to reprimand them, to admonish them, and to rebuke them, and this surah is the heart, and the heart is the noblest of organs, and man is the noblest of beings, He specified it in the address. For His address is an address to the jinn. He - affirming what the particle of purpose indicates regarding the exaltation of His rank and the greatness of His status - pointed out with the tool of distance: "O children of Adam!" That is, I did not specify you in this from the offspring of other kinds, so that this specification would lead you to disobedience. Rather, it should necessitate obedience and acknowledgment: "That you do not worship the devil." That is, the one who is far away, consumed by your obedience to him in what he whispers to you. Then He justified the prohibition of worshiping him with what necessitates a strong aversion to him, after He hinted at that by describing him, saying: "Indeed, he is to you." And the emphasis is that their actions are the actions of one who believes in his friendship: "A manifest enemy." That is, one whose enmity is very apparent, due to his enmity towards your father, the enmity that expelled you from Paradise, which has no abode more noble than it. And due to his command to you with that which makes the world repugnant, from discord and conflict, and due to his beautification of the transient, which no sane person desires, if there were no flaw in it other than its transience. So how if most of it is filled with impurities, filth, and burdens?! So how if it distracts from the eternal?! So how if it is an obstacle to the Lord?! So how if it angers Him, blocking Him from you?!
