Commentary

And when the decree was: "So look; and increase in regret, O criminals"; He added to it His saying: ﴿And separate yourselves﴾; meaning: be distinct in a way that is of utmost intention; and it followed the previous pattern of increasing the terror of that situation; by repeating His saying: ﴿Today﴾; meaning: from My righteous servants; or from those who remained with you in the situation; so that they may be freed from their burdens; and be healed from their harms; because the absence of the observer is the most complete bliss; and the removal of the enemy is the highest joy; and He omitted the call to them; not for the closeness of honor; but to indicate that they are in the grip; there is no barrier to the utmost control over them for whatever is desired; because there is no hindrance between them; ﴿O criminals﴾; meaning: those deeply entrenched in crime; so do not let it occur to you that you will mix with them today at all; and this is as you used to distinguish yourselves from them in this world; and sever ties with them in arrogance; and pride; so this is His saying to the criminals; and that is His saying to the believers; thus it is confirmed that it is a heart; because through it is the rectification of some of the accountable; and the corruption of others; which is the completion of the rectification of the first ones; and it has been previously mentioned in the early parts of Surah "Ar-Rum"; what is beneficial to recall here.
