Commentary
Then he explained what they call upon Him - meaning they seek Him - with the utmost longing for Him. Or he began to inform about Him by saying: ﴿Peace﴾; meaning: very great; its description cannot be comprehended. Upon you, O people of Paradise; it exists; or it is said. And peace encompasses all blessings. Then he clarified the state of this peace; by what he manifested of its greatness by saying: ﴿A saying from a Lord﴾; meaning: the Ever-Benevolent; ﴿Merciful﴾; meaning: the Great Bestower; by what is pleasing to the Divine. Just as they used to do in this world, performing all that which brings pleasure; He will have mercy on them in the state of peace; and hearing the words with the delight of vision; while being fortified against astonishment; and the shock of the great matter; and by the qualification for this most honored station; while they are deficient in it. And this context clarified that it is from Allah (glorified and exalted is He) without an intermediary; for He confirmed it by the saying; and the letter of beginning; and mentioning the attributes of benevolence. As the scholar Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri said: And there is no doubt that nothing is equal to this in bliss; and the coolness of the eye; and honor; and high status; and there is no doubt that this is the intended meaning in truth; for it is the heart of bliss on that day which is truly the heart of existence; hidden; and righteousness; and corruption. Thus it is correct that this verse is the heart of this surah; just as this surah is the heart of the Qur'an. And there has come a hadith in the tafsir of al-Baghawi; and the Book of the Two Hundred; for the scholar Abu Uthman al-Sabuni; that it is from Allah (glorified and exalted is He); without an intermediary; from Jabir - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said: "While the people of Paradise are in their bliss; suddenly a light shone upon them; and they raised their heads; and behold, the Lord (glorified and exalted is He) has looked down upon them from above; and He said: (Peace be upon you, O people of Paradise); and that is His saying (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿Peace, a saying from a Lord, Merciful﴾; and He looks at them; and they look at Him; and they do not turn their gaze to any of the blessings as long as they are looking at Him; until He veils Himself from them; and His light and blessing remain in their abodes."
The scholar Abu Uthman said: This hadith has a strange chain of narration; and text; I do not know that I have written it except from this source.
