Commentary

And when the soul's joy cannot be complete except with the suitable companion; He said: ﴿They﴾; meaning: with their outward appearances; and their inward selves; ﴿and their spouses﴾; meaning: their forms that are in the utmost compatibility; just as they used to leave them in the beds in the most delightful state; and they would arrange their feet in our service while they are weeping; ﴿in shades﴾; meaning: they find in it the coolness of the hearts; and the ultimate desire; just as they used to roast their hearts in the house of toil with the heat of fasting; and the bitterness of commands; and patience in pleasing us through pains; and they would restrain their hands and hearts from wealth; by giving charity in our paths through the passing days; and the turning of nights; and the reading of Hamzah; and Al-Kisai; with the joining of the dhad; and the omission of the alif; on the basis that it is more extensive; and the agreement of both in the plural indicates that the shade in it differs according to the differences in deeds.

And when enjoyment cannot be complete except with the elevated state that enables the increase of knowledge; which necessitates the comfort of the soul; and the delight of the eye; with the expansion of vision when extending the gaze; He said: ﴿on couches﴾; meaning: the adorned high beds; which are inside the curtains; Al-Baghawi said: Thalab said: there cannot be a couch until there is a covering on it; and Ibn Jarir said: "the couches": the curtains; in them are the beds; and Abu Ubaid narrated in the Book of Virtues; from Al-Hasan who said: we did not know what the couches were; until we met a man from the people of Yemen; who informed us that the couch among them is the covering in which the bed is; and this is a reward for what they used to adhere to the mosques; and they would lower their gazes; and they would devote themselves for our sake; ﴿reclining﴾; just as they used to strive in deeds standing before us in most situations; and "reclining": means leaning on one side; with reliance on what provides comfort; or sitting in a manner resembling squatting; and his reading with the joining of the kaf; and the omission of the hamzah; indicates more towards squatting; and the reading of the broken kaf; and the joining of the hamzah indicates closeness to stretching; due to the brokenness in it; for it is said - as narrated by Abu Abdullah Al-Qazzaz -: "I leaned the man for resting"; if you made him a pillow; meaning: a cushion on which he rests.
