Commentary
And when the soul longed to hear what they would say when they witnessed what they used to deny; he resumed his saying: ﴿They said﴾; meaning: those who are from the people of woe among the generality of those who stood for the blowing; and they are all who had died before that; and when they were aware that the recompense for what they had sent forth was all disgrace; they followed it with their saying - narrating - glorified and exalted is He - their expression at that time; because it was more painful for them -: ﴿O woe to us﴾; meaning: there is nothing present with us today that would comfort us except woe; then they asked; following their habit in ignorance; so they said - revealing their inner thoughts; specifying woe for themselves; because they were in a state of doubt -: ﴿Who has raised us from our sleeping place﴾; they counted their place where they had been - along with what they were in from the torment of the barzakh - a comfortable resting place compared to what they had realized that they would face from the greater torment; and they unified it indicating that they, despite their multitude; and their distance; were in standing like one soul; then they remembered what they had feared that Allah would raise them for the recompense; which is the mercy of the King for the people of His kingdom; so they said responding to themselves - resuming -: ﴿This is what﴾; meaning: the promise that; ﴿He promised﴾; meaning: by it; and they omitted the object generally; because they are now in the realm of belief; ﴿The Most Merciful﴾; meaning: the general mercy; whose mercy necessitates; and it is necessary; for the resurrection; to give justice to the oppressed from their oppressor; and to reward each one for their deeds; without injustice; and He has had mercy on us by sending the messengers to us with that; and they have long warned us of its occurrence; and warned us of its difficulty and length; and when the decree was: 'So the Most Merciful spoke the truth'; he added to it his saying: ﴿And the messengers spoke the truth﴾; meaning: regarding His matter; ﴿Who brought us His promise; and His warning; so Allah, who had previously promised it; and sent His messengers with it; is the one who raised us; confirming His promise; and that of His messengers.
