And when he mentioned the scarcity of their good, which is based on their mockery of the day they were reminded of the command to be cautious, and the reasoning by hoping for mercy, he followed it with the story of another mockery from them. This indicates their great ignorance by their denial of what they are promised, in a way that explicitly states that day, and depicts it in a manner that does not allow anyone with the slightest grasp to not submit to it. So he said: ﴿And they say﴾; meaning: a continuous habit linked to what has preceded that necessitates their denial. They increased in their expression with a tool of proximity in their reproach, indicating that you have increased upon us in threatening with it, and bringing it closer to us, until it was thought that it would be our morning or our evening, and we did not sense from it an eye or a trace; ﴿When is this﴾; and they increased in mockery by calling it a promise; so they said: ﴿The promise﴾; meaning: that which you threaten us with, sometimes hinting and sometimes stating explicitly; hasten it for us; and provoke; and incite; more in denial by their saying: ﴿If you are truthful﴾.
