Commentary
And when he mentioned the two times, he mentioned their two signs. He said: "And the sun"; meaning: that which the day is peeled from the night by its setting. "It runs"; and when its absence at night is like the stillness of a person in his resting place; and its being placed on a line that is determined for its movement every day; by a determination in which there is no deviation; and a path that does not bend. He said: "for a fixed point"; meaning: great; "for it"; and it is the movement; which does not deviate from it to the south or north; going and coming; and it is in it swift - as indicated by the expression with the preposition 'to' in the place of "to"; and this is supported by the reading: "there is no fixed point for it"; rather it is always running until the end of the world; in a place that is established; firm; which is worthy of permanence; and he expressed it; although it does not settle as long as this universe exists; so that it is not imagined that the continuity of its movement is due to the fact that the place of its running cannot be settled upon; and this does not contradict what is in Sahih al-Bukhari; and in the Book of Faith from Sahih Muslim; from Abu Dharr - may Allah be pleased with him - that the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - said: "Its fixed point is beneath the Throne; and it goes and seeks permission to prostrate; and permission is granted to it; and it is as if it has been said to it: return from where you came; and it rises from its setting." This is the wording of Muslim; and the wording of Bukhari will come; and it may be that the fixed point is the end of its running, at the annihilation of this existence.
And when this running is on a system that does not falter over the passage of years; and the succession of eras; the imaginations become weary of extracting it; and the minds become perplexed in deriving it; he magnified it by saying: "That"; meaning: the astonishing matter for the minds; and he increased its greatness by the form of intensification; in his saying: "determination"; and he confirmed that; diverting the saying from the absolute manifestation of greatness; to specifying it with the attributes of might and knowledge; magnifying this verse; alerting that it is the greatest of the verses of the heavens; he said: "the Mighty"; meaning: the One whom no one can overpower in any of His matters; and He is dominant over all things; "the Knowing"; meaning: the One who encompasses knowledge of all things; who manages the matter; so it proceeds on a wondrous system and a unique path that is not afflicted by weakness; nor does any type of flaw ever reach it; until He - glorified and exalted is He - wills the annihilation of this universe; so that its movements cease; and its existences perish. Al-Bukhari narrated from Abu Dharr - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: "I was with the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - in the mosque; at the setting of the sun; and he said: 'O Abu Dharr, do you know where it goes?' I said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'It goes until it prostrates beneath the Throne; and seeks permission; and permission is granted to it; and it is about to prostrate and it will not be accepted from it; and it seeks permission and it will not be granted to it; and it will be said to it: return from where you came; and that is His saying - exalted is He: "And the sun runs for a fixed point for it."'"
