Commentary
And when He trained them on observing the signs of the tangible realities that indicate the magnificent power; especially regarding resurrection; He elevated them to the meanings in that manner; for the existence of each of the two colors; after its annihilation; is the clearest evidence for resurrection; so He said - transferring them from the universal place to the universal time; encompassing both substances; and attributes -: ﴿And a sign for them﴾; meaning: regarding the restoration of something after its destruction; ﴿the night﴾; meaning: that which they observe; there is no doubt in it for them; nor is there any way to remove it; then He resumed His saying: ﴿We strip﴾; returning to the manifestation of greatness; indicating the majesty of this action in particular.
And when the original in this existence is darkness; and light is an occurrence; and its light is not pure; He expressed with "from"; which is suitable for mingling; along with permeating in the parts; so He said: ﴿from it the day﴾; meaning: that which was mixed with it; by removing the light; and revealing the reality of the night; ﴿So when they﴾; after our removal of the day which we stripped from the night; ﴿are in darkness﴾; meaning: entering into darkness; with the appearance of the night; which the light was covering; just as the skin covers the sheep; Al-Mawardi said: and that is because the light of the day mingles in the air; so it illuminates; and when it exits from it, it becomes dark; Ibn al-Jawzi transmitted this from him; and the context certainly indicates that the estimation is: "And the day we strip from it the night which was covering it; and predominating over it; so when they are seeing."
