Commentary
And when He mentioned - glorified and exalted is He - what is in the crops; and what does not have a stalk of the blessing; and the power; and the context indicated therein to the exclusivity; He followed it with what clarified that the intended meaning is glorification; not the real exclusivity; by manifesting the blessing in others; of the great trees; and the small ones; which have sustenance and fruits; He said - indicating His greatness by the manifestation of greatness -: ﴿And We made﴾; meaning: by what We have of greatness; ﴿in it﴾; meaning: the earth; ﴿gardens﴾; meaning: orchards; that cover their interior with what is in them of intertwined trees; And since the date palm - along with what is in it of benefit - is a constant adornment; because its leaves do not fall; He presented it; and named it by its name; He said: ﴿from date palms﴾; and in it is also an indication that it is all beneficial; its wood; its fibers; its branches; its fronds; its clusters; and its fruit; as fresh dates and ripe dates; and dried dates; and for this reason - and Allah knows best - He came in it with the form of the plural of abundance; like 'the springs'; And since the vine does not have adornment with leaves that provide shade; except when the grapes are standing; He said: ﴿and grapes﴾; and the plural indicated in both; without the grain; to the abundance of the variety of types in the one kind; which necessitates the apparent difference in size; and taste; and other than that.
And when the gardens do not become proper except with water; and it is in the nature of water to sink into the soil; and to settle with the intensity of flow downward; So the boiling of it toward the high direction is a remarkable matter for the mind; it cannot be except by the force of a wise restrainer; He said: ﴿And We caused to gush forth﴾; meaning: We opened a great opening; ﴿in it﴾; and it indicated the extremity of its greatness; and its elevation above being encompassed by anything of it; by the partitive; by His saying: ﴿from the springs﴾; and the definite article here indicates that the earth is composed over the water; so every place in it is suitable for water to gush forth from it; but Allah prevents it from some places; unlike the trees; nothing from them predominates over the earth; and in that is a reminder of the blessing in withholding water from some of the earth; to be a place for dwelling; and if He willed, He would have caused the earth to gush forth springs; as He did with the people of Noah - blessings and peace be upon him -; and flooded the entire earth.
