Commentary
And when He informed about them - glorified and exalted is He - with what is the truth of their matter; and He encouraged them with the example He set for them; and He frightened them; and that did not benefit them; it produced regret upon them; and upon those who are exemplified by them; and those who resemble them; He said (the Most High): ﴿O regret!﴾; meaning: this state is deserving of a great regret; ﴿upon the servants﴾; as if it was said to it: come; for this is from your states that it is right for you to be present in; for these are deserving of being regretted upon; and regret is: the intensity of remorse for what has passed; for its loss burns; and his matter is exhausting; so there is no way to return it; and it may be that the meaning is that the servants - due to the abundance of what they reflect of their deeds - do not part from the causes of regret; nor is there anything present with them other than it; so they have no companion except it; nor is there anything that dominates over them besides it.
And when it was as if it was said: what state? He said - clarifying it for him; and explaining the reason for the regret -: ﴿What comes to them﴾; and he emphasized the negation; and the generality; by saying: ﴿from a messenger﴾; meaning: any messenger; at any time; ﴿except that they were with it﴾; meaning: with that messenger; ﴿mocking﴾; meaning: they create mockery; and the messengers are the farthest of creation from mockery in state; in words; and in actions; and it is clear that the one who mocks one in this state is doomed; so he is deserving of being accompanied by regret; and to be regretted upon.
